Silas Sorrow sold his soul…He held a city to ransom…He wrote a melody in body parts…He swindled God…
And Silas was only getting started when he fell in love with Ella Dubois, discovering she was a much darker force than even him.
New Orleans in the Jazz Age was a weird, corrupt and beautiful place, with mobsters, witches, an evil preacher and a fortune for the taking.
Hamburg, Germany was a city of repression, hypocrisy, dark secrets and pretty victims.
When these two worlds collide only Hiro Kanagawa and the sacred bonsai, ENKIDU can save them from themselves.

Mr Sorrow Book 1 ENKIDU Quartet edition by Greg Lawrence Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Silas Sorrow, son of a widowed housekeeper to a music-hating, malicious, millionaire, white, widower Calvinist minister, Ezekiah Hinton, in the early 20thC racial melting pot of New Orleans, has a gift for the arts, music in particular, and business. His best friend is Shadrach, Ezekiah’s sweet, sheltered son, but with friends like Louis Armstrong and business mentors like gambler Papa LaFarge, Silas thrives as jazz and blues flower from the streets of Storyville and pre-KKK killers stalk the night. His mum’s boss causes her death, Silas spins out, and born of hatred, makes a deal for his soul with a spirit hobo who goes by the name of Rhadamanthus, but turns out to be the Adam.
Ella Dubois, born in Hamburg to a black composer/opera singer father, Frank, now Franz, and a white German mother who died when she was 11, is pimped out at 12 by her father to the mayor for Frank’s own career gain. Ella learns fast, has an affair with, and later blackmails her singing coach, slowly poisons her father’s complicit housekeeper, moves into her home masquerading as her niece and sets up as a prostitute and thief, but is finally thrown out of town, arraigned for stealing a pistol in another village, and lands on her feet at the castle of the gay Rudi, a wealthy trickster on the run from the Bolsheviks.
Silas, with his newfound persuasion, metes out a small but macabre revenge in NO and seals the city’s musical future, then flees the demons of his own success, settling for life aboard a cruise liner, where he meets the now independent Parisian singing star Ella, and the rest, as they say, is history, or more correctly, faction, and far too much to outline in any synopsis.
Suffice to say it’s a not very Faustian/Robert Johnson-type picaresque tale that covers much of the 20thC and roams across Europe, USA, and beyond, ending with a happily unconventional family of three generations and more races enjoying Sorrow’s amassed millions after fending off various nemeses, real and apprehended, ending very spiritually - ah, but no spoilers here.
Certainly among the most entertaining historical factions I have ever read, EL Doctorow included. Love the elegance, the wit, and especially the invention.

Mr Sorrow Book 1 ENKIDU Quartet edition by Greg Lawrence Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Wow, wasn't expecting that! A good read.
Mr Sorrow is well worth a read. Tripping through post war Europe and the birth of Jazz in New Orleans leaving a ripple of incredibly inventive murders in their wake - the 2 main characters are compelling, well constructed and more than a little psychotic. The novel is rich in history and surroundings, the jazz scenes are full of well-known names. I'd classify it as fast-paced, full of deceit and it certainly had some surprises. It is not suitable for children but for those of us who like a bit of creative murder - this is a novel for you.
