Fun and easy read of the kind of history that used to be well known among educated people. Explains how ambitious Romans did not make better wine or something to make people's lives better. No. Ambitious Romans bought public offices. Even if they had to borrow money, they bribed their way to higher and higher offices until they could get an appointment as governor of a province. Then they would steal all the money they could while governor and live easy back in Rome afterward. All the offices had term limits. There were few permanent public offices besides senator. In spite of the slavery and government corruption, some modern scholars blame the fall of Rome on Christianity!Product details

Roman Life in the Days of Cicero Alfred J Church 9781519630612 Books Reviews
Yawn
A good overview of Roman Life and the intrigue, murder, and plunder associated with political life. A world where accountability was relative. A good over view of Cicero's life and his accomplishments, recommended highly.
The writing is a little old fashion, not much passion, and intrigue as you would get from a "modern" overview. Nonetheless if you are interested in the highlights', and major events without the drama, this has it.
